Gigabit Service for Alameda?

Fellow Alamedans:

The Alameda Chamber is sending out information regarding Google’s pilot program for 1 Gigabit service and we can help nominate Alameda to be first in line to get this exciting new service.

What does it do? It would accelerate everything we do online and allow Alamedans to take full advantage of new applications that will emerge in an integrated ultra-high speed environment.

WireAlameda, a community organization, has organized to help Alameda apply for the pilot program and is currently working with the City to assist them with its submission. Additional information regarding WireAlameda can be found at http://www.wirealameda.org.

Please read below for info on how to nominate Alameda and other resources.

What is Google Fiber for Communities?
Google has recently announced a pilot program to install ultra-high speed internet service for 50,000 to 500,000 people in selected communities. Google’s program would provide direct fiberoptic cable to the user allowing data transmission up to 1 Gigabit per second. This is over 100 times faster than existing networks and is far faster most businesses have or can afford. Google has posted information regarding the pilot program at http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi.
A Gigabit network would be a tremendous asset to any community and is an incredible opportunity for Alameda. Not only does the jump to Gigabit accelerate everything we do today, it allows Alamedan’s to use the internet in new and highly creative ways taking full advantage of new applications that will emerge in an integrated ultra-high speed environment.1
